COUN 120 Syllabus

This is my third semester teaching COUN 120, and the experience has been incredibly rewarding. I hope to continue teaching this course in the future and continue growing as an educator. Throughout the semester, I had the opportunity to create lesson plans designed to support students’ academic and personal growth. I do my best to incorporate creativity into my lessons, making learning engaging, meaningful, and relevant to students’ experiences. I strive to create a classroom environment where students feel supported, encouraged, and empowered to take ownership of their educational journeys.

Below is the syllabus for this semester, which reflects the topics, assignments, and learning experiences I developed to support students throughout the course.

This lesson plan focuses on the importance of creating community collectives and helping students identify the people they can rely on for support. Students are encouraged to find their accountability partners and build a team of individuals both on and off campus who can support them through moments of confusion, worry, or uncertainty. The goal is for students to recognize that they do not have to navigate their academic and personal journeys alone and that having a supportive community can make a meaningful difference.

I incorporate music into this lesson to help students understand how collectives can work in any space. The example I chose was a DJ collective, where each DJ brings their own unique sound, style, and creativity. When they come together, they create something greater than what they could create individually. The video also highlights how each person has an opportunity to shine while contributing to the collective as a whole.

I thought this was a dope and creative way to introduce the concept of collectives because it connects students to something relatable while demonstrating the importance of individuality, collaboration, and community. Ultimately, I want students to recognize that their individual strengths matter and that, when they come together and support one another, they can create a stronger community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

COUN 120 Campus Partnerships

As an instructor, I am committed to bringing new faces, perspectives, and resources into the classroom. Over the past few semesters, I have built relationships with colleagues and departments across campus to create a strong network of support for my COUN 120 students.

This semester, I had the opportunity to welcome the Mental Health Peer Educators into our classroom. They shared valuable mental health resources and information with our students, creating an opportunity for students to learn more about the support available to them on campus. This visit was especially meaningful because many of my students had expressed interest in learning more about mental health and accessing additional resources.

Many students shared that they had made personal counseling appointments after learning about the resources available to them. This reinforced the importance of bringing campus resources directly into the classroom and creating opportunities for students to connect with the people and services that can support their success. I hope to continue building these relationships and creating a classroom environment where students feel supported, connected, and empowered to seek out the resources they need.
